Almost 500 Ohio University students, staff members and administrators helped carry boxes and direct traffic during residence hall move-in this year - the biggest turnout the university has ever had, OU's dean of students said.
From 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, volunteers from 24 student organizations unloaded cars, carried boxes up flights of stairs and gave directions as part of the Go Green move-in team. Staff members and administrators helped with the organizations' efforts as well.
This was the most organized move-in effort in recent years, Dean of Students Ryan Lombardi said. Volunteers wore Go Green T-shirts and were stationed around every dorm.
Most parents I spoke to were very appreciative of the extra help. ... The organization and the energy of all the volunteers were terrific
he said.
Some parents agreed this year's move-in went more smoothly than those of previous years.
(OU) has done a good job said Bill Ventura, the parent of two OU students. This seems more organized now than when we moved our other son to South Green three years ago.
His wife, Jen, and son, Sam, a freshman living in Washington Hall, agreed.
Parking was easy and we weren't even here 30 minutes
Jen Ventura said. There was no traffic or slow-ups coming into Athens (from Dublin
Ohio).
More than 140 student athletes also participated in the Go Green efforts, said Jason Corriher, assistant athletic director for media relations.
This was the first time in a while (Athletics) made a department-wide effort to help with move-in
Corriher said. One common theme I heard was parents were expecting a long day of carrying boxes
and they thanked us for all of the extra muscle.
Stacy Strauss, OU's women's soccer coach, said 29 soccer players volunteered as part of the team's yearly community service.
(The players) thought it was a nice opportunity to help others settle in
she said. I was at Bromley Hall
and people were really appreciative. There were some great parents and students who enjoyed the help.
Brandon Weaver, a sophomore linebacker on the football team, said the volunteers helped some students who thought move-in would take all day get settled within half an hour.
I know my freshman year
I had a lot of trouble moving in because I came here early
so I thought I'd lend a hand
