New choir fulfills teacher's wish for more music

From Gilbert and Sullivan to Christmas music, and whether singing in Yiddish or Japanese, Metra Peterson blends the small group of voices together to create harmony. Meeting at ARTS/West for only an hour and a half each week, new community choir Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass (S.A.T.B.) strives not only for perfect pitch, but also to make a difference in Athens.

A music teacher at Meigs Middle School, Peterson decided to start S.A.T.B. when her student choir was cut. Eager to make a difference through songs about social justice, Peterson said she noticed there weren't a lot of secular choir options for community members.

I felt naked without a choir

Peterson said. I felt like I really wanted to direct and conduct and have this diversified music.

Made up of community members interested in both music and social issues, Peterson said the choir plans to sponsor community organizations and center each concert on a specific theme. For its first performance, it will associate with the Athens Birth Circle, a support group for pregnant women and new parents.

Choir member Nellie Werger said she had sung with Peterson before and was excited to become involved in another choir with her.

We've been really wanting a choir we could do something different with said Werger, who sings second soprano in S.A.T.B. It's really an opportunity to sing whatever it is we're inspired to sing.

Werger said she also likes the fact that it creates publicity for small, local organizations.

I think it's a vehicle for visibility. By working together I think we can get ... more news and information out there

Werger said.

Although the choir meets each Tuesday to practice, singing won't be the only performing art showcased. Jeff Miltko plans to play guitar for the group, in addition to participating vocally.

Miltko said he noticed Athens' support for music early on.

One of the first things I noticed when I moved to Athens was the arts scene

Miltko said. There was a big priority on the arts. It seemed to have a big presence in the town.

Peterson said variety in musical styles will remain one of her main goals with the group.

There will not be any choral rock I'm not going to look under for the music

Peterson said.
