Today and tomorrow, the College of Fine Arts is bestowing a most- deserved honor - its 2010 Distinguished Alumnus Award - on Gene Thrailkill, founder of the Marching 110.
I had the privilege of marching in the band under coach Thrailkill beginning in 1968, the second year of the band we all know today, when it still was known as The 100 Marching Men of Ohio. In my years as a student and in the years since I graduated, I've watched this band evolve and grow into one of Ohio University's premiere programs.
I'm proud to have been part of today's Marching 110, almost from the start. I'm thankful for the lasting friendships I developed during my years in the band. Gene Thrailkill is among those friends.
There are receptions on campus for Gene Thrailkill tonight and tomorrow afternoon. Please stop by and thank him for his lasting contribution to Ohio University - the Marching 110 -now 43 years old and going strong.
Thanks, coach
and congratulations.
