Sculptors show at OU

Traditional ceramics join contemporary sculptures as the Ohio University Ceramics Department hosts the Ohio University Ceramics Invitational 2010 in Trisolini Gallery.

The Invitational opened Sept. 1 following a weeklong woodfire symposium where four artists held workshops and displayed their work, said Petra Kralickova, Trisolini's director of exhibitions.

The artists - Josh Copus, Lindsay Oesterritter, Missy McCormick and Matt Hyleck - will have their work shown along with the works of 21 other artists until the exhibit ends Oct. 9. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

We wanted a strong show and to invite a lot of (artists)

said ceramics graduate student James Tingey. We tried to pick people who had not shown (their work) here before.

The exhibit features a variety of styles, from Mary-Louise Carter's Teapot and Cups made of porcelain to Russell Wrankle's earthenware Hare with Tortoise Shell to Inelastic Cross Section by Brian Harper, a stoneware piece made from carved and sandblasted pipe.

Harper takes industrial materials and transforms them Tingey said.

Vessel work, or objects that are traditionally functional such as a vase or jar, will also be on display. One of those pieces is an untitled piece of woodfired industrial ceramics by Brian Benfer.

The artwork is not necessarily limited to vessels or sculptural ceramics, as there is often blending between the two types, said Tingey.

(Visitors would) be surprised by what ceramics encompasses Tingey said.

The artists' work is for sale and can be viewed during gallery hours. Trisolini Gallery is closed until Sept. 13.
