It took 110 minutes of play for Ohio and Cleveland State to prove there is no such thing as a conventional tie.
The Bobcats (2-2-1) and Vikings played differing styles of soccer and received goals from unusual sources in their 1-1 draw at Krenzler Field Friday.
Each team's goal came from a defender who had not previously scored at the college level.
Ohio used six substitutes to maintain its speed through two overtimes while the Vikings relied on their starters. Three Bobcats played more than 90 minutes in the match.
I thought the energy level was pretty good throughout. Our overall performance was a bit better in the second half and the overtimes
said coach Stacy Strauss. I thought that we showed our depth and our ability.
The Bobcats took advantage of their fresh legs on transition in the 72nd minute, when defender Rachael Philpot netted her first career goal. Ohio keeper Mattie Liston booted the ball past midfield, where two Bobcats headed the ball up to Philpot. The junior defender fired a quick shot from 20 yards out.
Rachael was able to beat one defender and then get the shot off so quickly that the goalkeeper wasn't expecting it Strauss said.
The Vikings responded five minutes later when they capitalized on a Jessica Bound corner kick when freshman defender Frederike Dubeau headed in a cross for her first career goal. Ohio yielded seven corners in the match. Strauss said her team concedes corner kicks when the ball gets behind the defense. The defense then has to attempt to clear the ball from the net in any manner possible.
I think we need to do a better job of eliminating balls in behind our defense Strauss said. We need to apply a bit more pressure on the ball farther up.
