Soccer: Ohio prepares offense for MAC

Among the many shots the Bobcats will take this weekend, one might be a shot in the arm for their offensive attack.

This weekend, Ohio (2-2-1) will visit a pair of opponents that have allowed a bevy of goals this season. The Bobcats will take on Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne tonight before travelling to Morehead State Sunday afternoon.

The Bobcats hosted both schools on the same weekend last season and came away with two victories by a combined score of 5-3. Ohio has never played on either team's home turf.

Certainly there's a few unknowns like the field conditions and the field size

but it's just par for the course said coach Stacy Strauss. When you travel you have to expect anything.

Anything might include doubling Ohio's goal total for the season. The Bobcats have scored four times through five games, but IPFW (2-5) and Morehead State (2-5) have surrendered a combined 33 goals in 14 games.

IPFW has allowed an average of 2.29 goals and 14.6 shots a game. The Mastodons gave up four goals apiece in their last two home games. Morehead State is averaging 2.43 goals against and 13.1 shots against. The Eagles allowed six goals in a loss to Toledo Aug. 27.

But the teams have combined for 19 goals of their own. Lisa Underwood leads the Mastodons with three goals and Erin Adams has netted five for the Eagles.

From what everyone has told us (Adams) plays pretty centrally and within the frame of the goal so that she can get those shots off

Strauss said.

Anytime you're shooting from a central position you are giving yourself a pretty good percentage chance to finish those opportunities.

The weekend matches are Ohio's final games before Mid-American Conference play begins next weekend. Strauss said the team would use its travel time between games to learn tactical skills by watching video.

The team also scheduled a travel break to eat lunch while watching the football team play Ohio State.

We still need this last weekend to really shore up a few things and polish a few other aspects of our game

Strauss said. Overall I think I'll only be happy if we can come out of the weekend with two wins.
