Alumni showcase comedies in festival

The opening of the Alumni Short Play Festival, produced by the Lost Flamingo Company, is sure to keep audiences laughing all the way through.

The five short plays, all written by Ohio University alumni, were chosen last spring as part of a new project by LFC in an effort to provide more opportunities for actors. The productions will run tonight and tomorrow night at 8 in Mitchell Auditorium. All tickets will cost $2.

Kaitrin McCoy, a sophomore studying journalism, is making her directing debut with the comedy Waterworld, a play written by Doug Devor about the movie starring Kevin Costner. McCoy describes the play as having guy-style humor, but says the show about a close-knit group of four college guys will intrigue both genders.

It's really fun and it's really natural

McCoy said, comparing the humor of the play to Anchorman. The dialogue is like what you'd hear on the street in a normal conversation.

Dan Lasco, a sophomore studying video production and one of the actors in Waterworld, said much of the script will seem familiar to audiences.

Everyone here is going to be able to relate in some way or another Lasco said.

McCoy said she likes the alumni participation aspect of the show, in light of Homecoming Weekend.

It's a nice way to honor people that have come and gone McCoy said of the three alumni authors, who are all former LFC members. It's a nice way to sort of pay homage.

McCoy said her first directorial production has been a good experience, although she's directing an all-male cast.

I really get guys' humor and I really enjoy bantering back and forth with them during rehearsal

said McCoy, who says it comes naturally because she has two brothers. It's an atmosphere that encourages these guys to let loose and not be afraid to take risks.

Emily Dixon, a senior studying Spanish, says she also has found her production to be a strong ensemble effort. She said her cast of The Blind Date, also written by Devor, has learned a lot from one another.

Everyone comes with their own set of skills

Dixon said. They bring ideas as well. It's kind of like a sharing process sometimes.

Bringing people of different interests and skill-sets together is a focus of LFC, Dixon said.

I think it's a great way to meet other students from all around and from all different backgrounds

Dixon said.

Lasco also said LFC gives students an open environment in which to practice the performing arts.

You really have a lot of room to be creative and do risky things and try out new ideas

Lasco said. Everyone's just there to have fun and make some art.
