Bassett's trial date reset to November

A former Ohio University basketball player's trial has been pushed back until mid-November.

Armon Bassett, 23, will go on trial for one count of assault Nov. 18. At his last pre-trial Sept. 17, Athens County Municipal Court Judge William Grim decided that Bassett would go on trial in October.

The trial had to be pushed back until November because the request for discovery never reached the prosecution and Bassett failed to attend his final pre-trial conference.

The defense would not be ready for a trial in October, and many witnesses coming from Dayton would not be able to make it, said Douglas Francis, the public defender recently assigned to Bassett's case.

Bassett was charged with one count of assault after he allegedly punched the bouncer at Courtside Pizza and Bar, 85 N. Court St., in the face. The incident took place about 11 p.m. May 1.

Bassett was arrested after he fled on foot to the Verizon parking lot across the street and was recognized by witnesses, according to an Athens Police Department report.

Assault is a first-degree misdemeanor. Bassett could spend a maximum of 180 days in jail and pay a maximum fine of $1,000 if convicted, according to the Ohio Revised Code.

Bassett's final pre-trial is scheduled for Nov. 16, and his trial will begin Nov. 18.

Grim said he will not allow the trial to be pushed back any further because the case is from May.

Bassett played one season with the Bobcats and led the team in scoring with 17.1 points per game last season, taking Ohio to the NCAA Tournament. He declared for June's NBA Draft, but went undrafted.

The New Orleans Hornets signed Bassett for their NBA Summer League team in July, where Bassett averaged 2.3 points per game in three games.
