Fema-what?: Sexualizing breast cancer harmful to the cause

The I like it on the floor Facebook trend is simply the newest addition to the let's use sex to raise awareness for breast cancer At what point, however, does this strategy not only stop working, but also become counterproductive?

Just like last year's what color is your bra? this Internet meme is meant to theoretically raise awareness about breast cancer. In actuality, it is generally annoying and simply hyper-sexualizes a disease that kills approximately 40,820 women each year.

Initiated by private chain messages sent from female to female, the purpose of the meme is to confuse male Facebook users. After noticing the trend of I like it on the floor statuses, male users are supposed to get so curious that they simply have to find out what us silly girls are up to. Seriously. It's that stupid.

Don't get me wrong; I'm all for raising awareness. Breast cancer is a terrible disease that takes the lives of far too many. I just don't understand why we sexualize this specific form of cancer. Yes, they are boobs. Yes, men like them. But that is that the main reason we want to save the tatas?

We don't see prostate cancer sexualized in such a way. And why would we? Save the ta-tas has a much better ring to it then save the schlongs does. But why?

When it comes down to it, some awareness is always better than none. But there isn't a direct correlation between breasts and purses at all. At least last year's what color is your bra trend at least related to breasts.

So, who're we kidding? Maybe the Facebook fanpage for I like it on the floor says it best: Whether you are a full-fledged Breast Cancer supporter or a shameless

sexually-charged horndog this page is for you.

If you're actually serious about donating to breast cancer research, I'd suggest the Susan G. Komen fund (www.komen.org). Hey, why not post the link on your Facebook? You probably won't get any comments that say, Hey if you're really into that I'm free Thursday. But then again, that's not the point. Or is it?
