The Bobcats' shots could be counted on one hand in Friday's first half, yet it was the Golden Flashes who posted a zero on the scoreboard at halftime.
Ohio used two first-period penalty corners and just four shots to take an early two-goal lead against Mid-American Conference rival Kent State en route to a 3-1 win Friday.
The Bobcats made it a weekend sweep with a 3-0 win against Missouri State yesterday at Pruitt Field.
Sophomore Cathryn Altdoerffer scored her eighth goal of the season in the fourth minute of Friday's match.
Ohio cushioned its lead just before halftime when sophomore Andrea Biegalski scored on the team's second corner of the game.
I really was pretty calm on the sideline and never worried
coach Neil Macmillan said. We always seemed to have a lead in that game.
The Golden Flashes, who were ranked 21st in the nation in the latest Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I National Coaches Poll, got much more aggressive in the next half.
Kent State earned 15 corners in the second period. The Golden Flashes' 18 total corners fell one short of a team record.
For the defensive corner unit we are starting to get it down said senior Brittany Zorn, who scored in Saturday's win over the Bears. (Friday) was good practice.
Goalkeeper Courtney Seiders allowed her only goal of the weekend when Debbie Bell scored off a corner in the 58th minute.
Less than two minutes later, sophomore Taylor Brown lofted the ball over the goalie's head and into the net from the center circle.
The goal was Brown's team-leading 10th of the season.
The victory was especially sweet for Macmillan because the Bobcats have had difficulty winning in Kent in the past, he said.
Excellent job by us putting the ball in when it mattered
Macmillan said. That's the second time I've beaten (Kent State) up there.
Ohio now sits atop the MAC standings with a 4-1 conference record. Kent State dropped to third place at 3-2 while the Bears remained in last place with a 0-4 mark.
But first-place is little comfort for the Bobcats, Zorn said.
I always feel like we need to keep on pushing
she said. I always like to think that we are second.
You don't want to say that you're on top, yet.
