Metaphorically Speaking: Atom and Eve

Society is like an atom; all the atom's parts have to work together for it to function properly. Atoms make up everything around us much like society makes up the atmosphere around us.

Within an atom there are three subatomic particles: protons, neutrons and electrons. This is much like the people of our society. There are the protons - the optimistic people who always are smiling and seem to have a good day no matter what. There are the neutrons; the realists of society. The neutrons seem to be the bulk of society. They are never overly positive or overly negative, they are just there to provide company. Finally there are the electrons, society's pessimistic side. The electrons typically have something bad to say and do not make for good company, for they quickly will flip your mood to negative.

For every electron there is a proton; therefore, society stays in neutral. Neutral is very plain and boring in all forms, whether it be a color or a country. So if neutral is the mass of society, why does it seem like we're evenly distributed as pessimists, realists or optimists?

The answer is; we are not distributed evenly. Your outlook on life determines how you view everyone else. Everyone has a different opinion, a different set of eyes and a different perspective than the person sitting next to them. The majority of people will never understand what it is like to be someone else. The lack of open minds in society means as a whole we never will be able to understand one another fully. And that is a tragedy.

Why should the people of society have to choose to be a permanent electron, proton or neutron? Atoms comprise people as well as the things around us, but they do NOT control who you are as a person. That is your choosing and your choosing only.

It's time to break away from the norm with three permanent options. It is time for society to create a new element. And it is time for we, the people, to become more accepting and welcoming of outside particles.
