'Rocky Horror' slinks to Athens

Audience members will watch a whole new group do the Time Warp and strut its stuff at The Union this year.

Tonight the Lost Flamingo Company will open its annual performance of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Director Adam Bialek, a junior studying photojournalism, is in his third year of participation with the production.

He said this year's performance has a different dynamic because most of the cast is new to the show.

Everyone's in the same boat

Bialek said. No one's afraid of being judged by other cast members who know Rocky better.

Andy Haftkowycz, a sophomore studying theater and creative writing, is reprising the role of Eddie. He said he likes the unique element that comes with performing in a bar.

It's a lot easier because the audience is drinking and having a good time said Haftkowycz, who said the show is one of the biggest moneymakers each year for LFC. You really get to play off the part of the audience.

Haftkowycz said the production is a good fit for a college town.

You're in college he said. When else are you going to get the opportunity to go to a club wearing just your boxers or your bra?

Bialek also said the location of the production contributes to the ambience.

Since Rocky is inappropriate and absurd

I think putting it in a bar setting keeps that feeling alive

said Bialek, who also recommends that audience members dress in Rocky Horror-style clothing for the show. [The audience members] should know that they're not going to church.

Laura Ornella, a junior studying theater performance, said her experience with the less traditional show has helped her acting abilities. She said the fact that the film version of The Rocky Horror Picture Show is playing in the background has been a different experience.

Really

it's very hard to time the lines

said Ornella, who plays Janet. You can't look at a movie during the performance.

Ornella added that the cast has been one of the best parts of the rehearsal process.

It's nice to have people that like theater but are also just doing this because they like to have fun

Ornella said.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show will run tonight through Thursday, starting at 10 p.m. each night, with doors opening an hour before and tickets costing $5.
