Students have an on-campus forum to discuss race and other social problems through STARS, Students Teaching About Racism in Society.
We are the only issue-based group on campus that focuses on racism and similar themed issues
said Alex Maza, the group's vice-president.
The group, which has been a part of OU since the 1980s, is continuing its mission to raise awareness of racial issues.
Just overall we are getting the word out and letting students know of the prevalence of racism said Laura Hyde, president of STARS.
The group uses its meeting to facilitate discussions about various racial issues. Events Coordinator Sarah Williams said its objective is to try to promote discussion through understanding and educate people about these issues.
One event the group is planning is a forum highlighting the issue of Islamophobia cosponsored with the Muslim Students Association and the Student Senate Minority Affairs Commission.
We felt it was important because we are trying to change the perception of how Islam is being portrayed in the media as an extremist religion
said Maza, a senior studying political science and economics.
The event will consist of a panel discussion of five or six professors. It will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 8 in Baker University Center Theatre.
It's definitely an issue that is in the news
especially with the mosque debate. There are heating emotions
and we wanted to talk and dispel the stereotypes
said Williams, a senior studying political science.
Additionally, the group brings professors to its meetings to discuss social problems pertaining to not only racism, but also topics such as sexism, said Hyde, a sophomore studying International Studies.
It's a great way to get involved with a diverse group of people. It will help students to understand issues within our society
said Ashley Bush, STARS' public relations chair.
STAR meets Wednesdays at 8 p.m. in Baker University Center 231.
There are some issues that are hard to talk about
but they need to be discussed
and we talk about them
Hyde said.
