Students take a global look at media

The role of the media in global society is just one of the focuses Students for Global Media and Diversity (SGMD) is attempting to highlight this year.

We talk about international events and focus on the role of the media in a globalized society

said Nadia Sheng, president of the SGMD.

SGMD, which was formed last year, was involved in events such as the International Street Fair.

The first year was a learning experience. This year is about coming up with interesting activities said Yusuf Kalyango, SGMD adviser and director of the International Institute of Journalism at OU.

This year, the group's focus has changed at each meeting, one of which featured members of the Global Leadership Center discussing relations with Vietnam.

One thing that makes this group slightly different from other organizations is that it is composed of both undergraduate and graduate students.

We get really valuable information from (graduate students') opinions research

work and internship experiences

said Miaomiao Shao, vice president of SGMD.

The main event this quarter for SGMD is bringing in the Executive Director of the Pulitzer Center Jon Sawyer to speak tonight, Kalyango said. The group is also planning a trip to visit various media organizations.

We are related to the International Institute for Journalism that we have at Scripps. We are hoping to plan a trip to New York City or Washington D.C. or some place like that where we can meet with various media organizations

Sheng said.

Sheng said that although it is a small group, SGMD is trying to not only increase its membership but also provide variety in its activities.

There is not a set plan or agenda right now. We encourage members to come and share their ideas and to participate

Sheng said.

Shao said another goal is to increase international students' involvement.

We are trying to get foreign students to come and talk about their experiences and views of the media

Shao said.

Shao added that he feels the diversity benefits the group as a whole.

I know how they feel about American life and want to get involved to help promote and establish connections for them to share their opinions

to communicate and get to know one another

Shao said.

SGMD meetings are held weekly in Sing Tao Center 101.
