A Pittsburgh-based theater company will attempt to capture a Southeast Ohio audience's attention without saying a word tonight and, in the process, try to simplify the unfathomable and delve into the human mind.
Stuart's Opera House in Nelsonville will welcome Squonk Opera to perform its new show Mayhem and Majesty. Squonk Opera's newest production explores the wonders of sound, making music and bringing it into visualization.
Squonk Opera has been performing shows for over 18 years and has toured across the country. The show deals with the visualization and simplification of things unseen by the eye.
The troupe is known worldwide for its postmodern interpretations of everyday situations. The group has toured around the world since 2003. Its performances have experienced Broadway success and even won an American Theater Wing Special Effects Design Award.
Brian Koscho, the marketing and promotions coordinator for Stuart's Opera House, said It is an incredibly visual show - they use a whole lot of projectors
lights and other sets to present a really stimulating show. And with Majesty and Mayhem there is a live band playing as well throughout most of the show.
I think the easiest way to explain why people should come is because it will be unlike anything they have seen before, and we were able to offer this as a free show so we hope everyone comes to check it out, Koscho said.
The show is fit for all ages and although it is only playing tonight there will be special performances for surrounding area schoolchildren.
The visuals and sound intrigue old and young alike
and present an opportunity to expose children to the arts.
We believe it is important for young people to gain exposure to the arts, and this is one of those shows that can do that. Everyone should come check it out, and it's free, Koscho said. For Ohio University students or Athens folks who have not been to Stuart's Opera House before, this is a perfect opportunity for your first trip.
