Whatever it meant for the Bobcats, their two sides wrestled to a draw in Ohio's intrasquad meet yesterday.
As head coach Joel Greenlee watched from the stands, assistant coaches Quincy Osborn and Kyle Hansen led the Green and Black squads to a 19-19 tie in front of a sparse crowd at The Convo.
The Green squad, coached by Osborn, featured four returning starters from 2009, including All-American Germane Lindsey at 141 pounds.
The Black, coached by Hansen, only had one previous starter in 2009 Mid-American Conference champion Eric Schuth, at 197 pounds.
The intrasquad meet signaled the beginning of position battles at several weights.
I think that's part of it
Greenlee said. I also think part of it's preparing these guys for next week (at the Hokie Open). It's a long year. You could go and win this match today and not be our starter after two tournaments.
It's a start. It gives us an idea of what we need to do, it gives them an idea of what they need to do.
The graduation of seniors Seth Morton Kevin Christensen
Jacob Ison and Clay Tucker opened up holes in four different weight classes.
The Bobcats also lost Quentin Keyes
a mainstay at 133 pounds for the past several years. Keyes would have been a redshirt senior this year
but chose to graduate in June instead.
Redshirt sophomore Gabe Ramos looked like the returning starter at 125 pounds as he dominated redshirt freshman Alex Minnard of the Black.
The Black's Jake Wojcik easily handled freshman Drew Hammer at 133 pounds.
At 149 pounds
freshman Brad Squire narrowly bested the Green's Josh Speelman.
At 157 pounds
Tucker Gregor of the Green narrowly fell to Casey Gordon at the buzzer.
Perhaps the most anticipated battle was between incumbent Andy Hartshorn
a redshirt junior
and Jeremy Johnson
a redshirt freshman.
