The local chapter of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees swore in a new president at its meeting last night.
John Dillon will succeed Dave Logan, who headed OU's service workers' union for four years. Dillon, who was voted into office last month, will serve a two-year term.
Dillon, who served as the union's vice president for four years, could not be reached for comment.
Logan said he expects the union will do well under Dillon.
We've been in touch
he said. We've been talking daily and it'll be a smooth transition.
Although he had planned to serve another term before he retires in three years, Logan said he was proud of what he accomplished for the union, with Dillon serving as his vice president during his first term and Guard Dickens during his second.
(The vice presidents and I) were pleased with what we did Logan said. We were saddled with layoffs ... in both terms
and it was difficult to try and deal with.
Logan said he was most proud of his accomplishments following university layoffs earlier this March. After the layoffs, OU began to consult external businesses for construction work on campus.
I was able to bring that work back in-house
Logan said. I was even able to get the university to hire back some of the workers they laid off
so I was definitely proud of that.
Becky Watts, chief of staff to President Roderick McDavis, said that although it will take some time for the university to get to know Dillon, she looks forward to having a similar relationship as that of Logan.
Any time there is a change in leadership there is always the opportunity for the leaders for the union and the leaders for the university to get to know each other
Watts said. The university leadership had a good working relationship with Dave and always shared mutual respect and open communication and looks forward to having the same with John.
