Athens man facing four charges

An Athens man is facing four charges after he allegedly threatened two women and his own life with a handgun Sunday evening.

Donald Chalmers, 56, was arraigned via videoconference in Athens County Municipal Court Monday on two counts of aggravated menacing, one count of assault and one count of usage a weapon while intoxicated.

The charges stem from an argument that began Sunday at a Joneswood Drive residence, where Chalmers lived with his girlfriend, according to a release from the Athens Police Department.

The woman called her female friend and asked for a ride. When her friend arrived Chalmers allegedly punched her in the face and threatened both of them with a handgun. The two women left and went to the Athens Police Department.

Officers went to the residence and made contact with Chalmers via cell phone. Chalmers allegedly said he had a gun pointed at his head and threatened to shoot himself, according to the release. After 32 minutes of negotiation, Chalmers surrendered and was taken to Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail.

Chalmers pleaded not guilty to all four counts. He is being held on $4,000 bond with 10 percent.

All four of the charges are first-degree misdemeanors. Chalmers could spend a maximum of two years in jail and pay a maximum fine of $4,000 if convicted of all charges, according to the Ohio Revised Code.

Chalmers is due back in court Nov. 29 at 8 a.m. for a preliminary hearing.
