Former OU basketball player to pay fine, serve community service

A former Ohio University basketball player pleaded no contest to assault charges in Athens County Municipal Court this morning, resulting in a guilty verdict.

Armon Bassett was charged with the assault of a doorman at Courtside Pizza and Bar, 85 N. Court St., in May. The victim, John Willis, appeared to have a broken nose.

Bassett pleaded not guilty on May 3.

Today, at Bassett's final pre-trial, his plea of no contest resulted in a guilty verdict.

Athens County Municipal Court Judge William Grim sentenced Bassett to a pay a $250 fine and serve 40 hours of community service to be completed within the next 90 days. Basset was ordered to have no contact with Willis and is on probation for the next two years.

Bassett's lawyer, speaking on his behalf, expressed that Bassett no longer lives in Ohio and wants to put the matter behind him.

Bassett played one season with the Bobcats and announced last April that he planned on entering the 2010 NBA draft. He led the Bobcats to a MAC Tournament victory and was crucial in the famous upset over Georgetown in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
