I'm not talking about your every day, let's-see-how-much-of-your-butt-I-can-kiss compliment.
I'm talking about a set of words that line up like three sevens on a slot machine; I'm talking about a string of syllables that make birds sing and flowers bloom - I'm talking about a fabulous phrase that makes people happygasm.
Let us first break down the word com-pli-men-t.
COM: A prefix of Latin origin. It means together or jointly. As the best complements involve more than just you in a room alone, it lives up to its ancestor's legacy of COMpanionship (see what I did there?).
PLI: Originally an Atlantian letter meaning emotional healing
you can find its descendents in common, fabulous medical terms such as: splint or splints.
MEN: The plural of man. The founders of the English language clearly did this intentionally.
T: A great letter with which to end a word, easily in my top 26. See other great words that end in t such as: debt, lost, upset, tempest, drought and cat.
Put jazz hands on your compliments.
In a compliment, the phrases you look good or you are nice really mean You practice proper hygiene techniques and I have not yet found a reason to hate you.
Compliments should make people smile, not cringe.
Avoid compliments that deal with smell, unless you are referring to food. Your hair smells great actually means, I have been smelling your hair.
That's creepy.
You only can have one favorite person ever.
Overcomplimenting is not complimenting.
Compliments should catch people off guard.
You do not need to compliment someone after they compliment you. Next time try saying, I recognize that you just paid me a compliment or thank you.
Spontaneity is itself a compliment. Compliment someone who holds a door for you on their patience or someone who is yelling at you on their excellent flossing.
A good compliment also does not insult the person.
People never look good today they always look especially good today. Unless they usually do not look good, in which case, use the first example.
Men: they make people smile.
