Music store reopens at new location after tornado

A music store destroyed when a tornado ripped through Athens County in September reopened this month in The Market on State.

Studio E Music & Sound, a store originally based in The Plains, had to relocate after its North Plains Road location was destroyed by the Sept. 16 tornado and subsequent storms.

It ripped a 2-ton HVAC unit off and flew it into the parking lot

said Tim Edwards, the store's president.

The store was out of business from Sept. 16 to Oct. 15, as the damage it sustained did not permit business to continue, Tim Edwards said.

Studio E officially reopened at its 1002 E. State St. address on Oct. 15, he said.

This is not the first time the music store has moved, Tim Edwards said. After he resigned in 1979 from his music-teaching job in Morgan County, he began selling guitars out of his home to local students until customers started showing up in the middle of the night, he added.

He then moved his store to Grubb's Bakery in Glouster, he said, adding that when business outgrew the bakery, he moved the store to the Athens Mall until it was torn down. He then had to move to The Plains and now to The Market on State.

Despite all of the moves, the store continues to bring in customers by selling a variety of guitars, amps, keyboards, drums and other musical devices, according to the store's website.

Currently the store has 182 different guitars in stock, said Jesse Edwards, son of the store's president.

Studio E also offers drum, guitar and piano lessons taught by experienced staff members, Tim Edwards said, adding that a 30-minute lesson runs $12 or more depending on the type of lesson given.

Senior political science major Lilly Mathias said she was excited to explore the store and the music lesson options.

I would love to learn guitar Mathias said. It would be a great Christmas gift.

Although Mathias said she was interested in the new store, Katie Devlin, a senior psychology major, said she was not because of its distance from campus.

I would probably not (visit the store) because it is not close Devlin said.

Although some students are deterred because of the store's lack of proximity to campus, Tim Edwards said he is staying positive about the location change.

Our (regular) customers (in The Plains) say it will be more convenient for them at the new location

he said.
