Nick Tolford and Company will make their first appearance in Athens tonight.
Tolford, who plays piano and lead vocals, has played in Athens twice before in other bands, but is making his first appearance with his soul band. The Kyle Sowashes, Tin Armor and She Bears will also be playing the show.
Tolford's Columbus-based soul band features the lead singer's soulful, Motown-inspired voice.
This really is how my voice has always been
Tolford said. I was in a tech metal band when I was younger and also choir when I was a youngster but I've really had no other 'vocal training.'
I'm excited for the show and happy to be back in Athens. I'm good friends with the other two bands coming down and am excited to hear She Bears.
Tin Armor, another Columbus-based band, creates an indie-pop/modern-folk feel. The piano driven band has an abundance of strong male vocals, with three of the four members joining in on singing.
The indie-pop/modern-folk feel isn't always apparent, but the band's inspirations show how it has developed its music.
Matt Umland, who plays guitar, piano and vocals for the band, said, We listen to all kinds of music. Some of our main inspirations would be The Band
The Smiths
Paul Simon and the Staple Singers.
Athens natives She Bears will also be on the bill. The band has started playing more shows and is finding its stride on stage. Starting a band in Athens helps a band get noticed quickly.
Stephen Pence, guitar and vocals for the band, said, We love it in Athens
it's a great scene to be in
and we're lucky that this is where we were able to start our band.
The band has recently signed with Deep Elm Records. The Kyle Sowashes will also be on the bill.
