For Sue Jacobi and Michelle Jantsch, Friday's match means more than a Mid-American Conference rivalry match in the midst of an East Division title race.
The theme for Ohio's game against Miami Friday night is Dig Pink
an attempt to raise breast cancer awareness. Both Jacobi and Jantsch had grandmothers who developed the disease.
Both of Jacobi's grandmothers suffered from breast cancer and eventually died from other cancers that stemmed from it, while Jantsch's grandmother currently has the disease.
Breast cancer hits home for me as well Jacobi said. I think it's great that we're raising money trying to pack The Convo Friday and really just getting the awareness out there.
It's good for women's sports teams to do.
Professional and collegiate sports both participated in Breast Cancer Awareness Month during October. The National Football League wore pink apparel
including wristbands
chin straps and hats.
Many volleyball programs already played their Dig Pink matches during October as well
but the Bobcats planned the match later during the season.
Ohio will wear pink uniforms instead of the normal hunter green and white
and survivors of breast cancer will be recognized during the match.
I do like how a lot of programs across the country - even football teams - wear pink during October for breast cancer, Jantsch said. It's really cool to actually be a part of that, raise money and get to sponsor an event that's so important.
Glimpses of Greatness
Following Saturday's 3-1 win against Akron
coach Ryan Theis said Jacobi sometimes plays as if she were MAC Player of the Year.
The senior amassed a MAC season-high 22 kills and committed only nine errors in the Bobcats' (16-11
8-6 MAC) win. She also registered her third-consecutive double-double
getting a team-high of 13 digs during the evening.
Jacobi also took over for Ohio in the fourth set
when she rattled off six of the team's seven points in the middle of a 7-3 run
