Bassett appears in court after hometown arrest

Former Ohio basketball player Armon Bassett was arrested for possession of marijuana during the weekend - the latest legal woe for the former Bobcat standout.

Bassett, 24, a native of Terre Haute, Ind., was arrested near his hometown during the weekend and appeared in an Indiana court hearing yesterday.

He was arrested at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday and released 15 minutes later after posting bail, said an official at the Vigo County jail. Bassett is due back in court Feb. 23, court officials said.

Terre Haute police do not release arrest reports, so it is unclear how much marijuana Bassett had on him when he was arrested.

Possession of 30 grams or less is punishable by up to one year in jail and up to a $5,000 fine, according to Indiana Revised Code. If arrested with more than 30 grams, Bassett could face up to three years in jail and up to a $10,000 fine.

Bassett, who played one season with the Bobcats after transferring from the University of Alabama-Birmingham, helped lead the team to its historic NCAA tournament upset of Georgetown University last March.

But only months after leading the Bobcats to the second-round of the NCAA tournament and just nine days after declaring for the NBA Draft, Bassett was involved in a late-night fight at Courtside Pizza and Bar, 85 N. Court St.

He later pleaded no contest to assaulting Courtside doorman John Willis, and was handed a $250 fine and 40 hours of community service.

Willis is suing Bassett in the Athens County Court of Common Pleas for $275,000 in damages. Willis is claiming Bassett broke his nose during the incident, and the case is still pending.

Bassett was not selected in the NBA Draft but was drafted by the Maine Red Claws, an NBA Development League team. The Red Claws released him in November.

Bassett went on to play four games for Ironi Ramat-Gan, a professional team in Israel, where he averaged 13.5 points and 4 assists per game.

He is no longer listed on the team's current roster.
