Film series focuses lens on Latin American realities

A new perspective on South America and Central America will be showcased in the second-annual film series Latin American Realities through the Artistic Lens.

The goal was to showcase our program and our beloved continent and to indicate through those films how different we are

said José Delgado, director of the Latin American Studies program.

The plans for continuing the series were made in the fall, when Delgado and a group of graduate students selected the films. Delgado said their decisions were based on, people's interests knowledge issues they wanted to see talked about within our community.

This series comprises four films: Favela Rising, The Devil's Miner, Havana Suite and Arráncame la Vida. Each film comes from a different region, including Brazil, Bolivia, Cuba and Mexico.

That was the idea - to canvas as much as possible of the geography of the continent and showcase the issues according to the countries where these films came from

Delgado said.

Lourdes Gomez, a first-year graduate student studying Latin American Studies, said the films work well together because they deal with different themes.

I feel like film is a pretty powerful tool to tell a story

said Gomez. What better way to create awareness about a certain region than by showing a work that has been crafted locally

that is coming from that very local perspective.

Karla Schneider, associate director for the Center of International Studies, said that the series will be beneficial to language students because it will expose them to the different dialects of the regions they are studying.

There was no cost to hold the event and is being sponsored by the Latin American Studies Program.

The goal is that it will provide (students) with a much wider window through which to look at South America

and give them a diverse sense of some of the historical

political

economical

societal problems and histories that are gathered in these films

Delgado said.

The films will be screened every other Wednesday of the month. The first was Favela Rising, which was screened Jan. 12. Tonight, The Devil's Miner will be screened. Havana Suite will be screened Feb. 9 and Arráncame la Vida Feb. 23.
