Grammy-nominated alternative rock band the Goo Goo Dolls will perform in Athens April 6 at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium, according to an announcement on the trio's website yesterday morning.
Tickets will go on sale Feb. 8, and though details are still being finalized, the Ohio University Performing Arts Series is very excited about the new show addition
Andrew Holzaepfel, associate director of the Campus Involvement Center and booking agent for the Performing Arts Series, wrote in an e-mail.
The Goo Goo Dolls - comprised of vocalist and guitarist John Rzeznik, bassist Robby Takac and drummer Mike Malinin - reached the height of its popularity in the late 1990s. The band has produced 14 top-10 singles, including Iris and Slide in a career spanning more than 20 years.
In 1998, Iris was nominated for three Grammy Awards, topping off a successful year for the band's album Dizzy Up the Girl, which produced five top-10 singles.
Most recently, the usually pop-infused Goo Goo Dolls released 2010's Something for the Rest of Us, a leap into more serious songwriting for Rzeznik.
The band's recently added Athens show will come at the tail end of a Performing Arts Series season that includes singer-songwriter Ben Folds tomorrow and country artist Darius Rucker April 15.
