An initiative to provide those Ohio University students with meal plans a chance to feed local homeless is still going strong, albeit in a reduced capacity.
Good Works Inc., an Appalachian faith-based charity organization located in Athens, has maintained a partnership with OU Dining Services, allowing students to purchase non-perishable foods from the market for the charity. The food then goes to local people in need.
It's been hugely successful
said Gwyn Scott, executive director of Culinary and Dining Operations.
Good Works, which has been active since 1981 according to its website, has partnered with OU for more than five years, Scott said.
The charity previously used food leftover from the dining halls but has since discontinued doing so.
Good Works picked up some prepared items from the dining halls and different venues Scott said. They stopped doing this because of a lack of volume and staffing.
Scott said she does not know how much food is donated from OU regularly, but that the number and frequency of customers donating varies from quarter to quarter.
The charity organization operates a homeless shelter on Central Avenue, which serves about 200 area people a year, and the organization undertakes a variety of other outreach programs, according to its website.
Keith Wasserman, founder and executive director of Good Works, could not be reached for comment.
