Huntington, W. Va.’s police force has come to Athens in search of new recruits.
Police officers sat at a table Tuesday at Ohio University’s Baker University Center with posters and information advertising new jobs. The 106-man police force has two openings available immediately, and several other jobs will become available in the coming years, said Cpl. Richard Knight.
“We’ve had several applicants from around West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio,” Knight said. “We’ve had applicants as far away as Florida. We’re trying to give information to as many people as we can.”
Knight said several officers on the current force will retire in the coming years, and applicants will be considered for jobs at the department during the next 2 years.
He also said college students are targeted for recruiting because of their already-existing habits.
“College students generally have more discipline, and an aptitude to be more studious,” Knight said. “Pre-existing good habits.”
Knight said any interested party is eligible to apply. Applicants require a high school diploma or GED, US citizenship and must be 18 to 35 years old. Applications must be returned to the department’s office no later than Jan. 13.
