Stuart's Opera House creates cure for 'cabin fever' with show

With the advent of Winter Quarter, more people are choosing to stay indoors during the weekends. In order to combat the cabin fever that can accompany too much time spent cooped up, Stuart's Opera House is hosting a full day of art, music and live performances.

The way this event is set up

we have a lot more bands playing then we do at our usual one-performer shows said Brian Koscho, Stuart's marketing and promotions coordinator. It's a unique event this time of year when not that much is going on.

The Second Annual Cabin Fever Fest will kick off at 1 p.m. Saturday with a music swap and art sale on the first floor of Stuart's Opera House, 52 Public Square in Nelsonville.

It's like a mini flea market Koscho said. You can either purchase music or bring some stuff in to trade. There will also be local artists showing and selling handmade crafts.

At 6 p.m., live musical performances will start upstairs at Stuart's. The Pomegranates from Cincinnati, the Alwood Sisters from Columbus, and Wheels on Fire and Whale Zombie from Athens will join the headlining band, Maps & Atlases from Chicago.

Each year, Stuart's chooses a touring band - this year Maps & Atlases - to headline the event and draw the audience in, Koscho said.

They have music that will appeal to a young audience - which is partly what we're trying to do with a show like this - but that will also appeal to our audience

Koscho said. I really think they're approachable even though they do a lot of really complex stuff. They're a band for people who really love music; you'll come away impressed.

The band, which takes inspiration from sources as varied as David Bowie, the Talking Heads and Motown, will bring a progressive yet relatable sound to the Cabin Fever Fest.

We first started out a little bit more progressive and experimental

guitarist Erin Elders said. Since then we've been trying to put that sound into pop songs.

The band's interesting sound as well as the energy of its live performance will give the audience at Saturday's show a fun experience, Elders said.

I think that the live show is a little bit more stripped down but a little bit more high energy

a little bit more rock and roll

I guess

Elders said. We just really like people to have a good time at the shows - you can tell if the audience is having fun and getting into it.
