The Bobcats fielded their top squad last weekend at the All-Ohio Championships and were repaid with a 10th place finish - their worst in 10 seasons.
For this weekend at the Lake Erie Open, coach Clay Calkins said he would give a number of athletes that have yet to compete this season - many of them freshman - the chance to prove their mettle.
It's going to be a good-sized meet
Calkins said. There are going to be all different talent levels so we'll be able to plug in our athletes accordingly. Hopefully some of the people that haven't competed yet don't get overwhelmed.
The Bobcats did not score in the jumps or throws events last weekend, and that is something Calkins said he is looking to improve on this weekend. He said a number of athletes, including junior Jamie Fisher, have earned the right to compete.
Fisher has been looking better in practice in the vaults so we're going to give her a shot Calkins said. Hopefully she can respond well.
Calkins said he is hopeful that sophomore Janaia Sledge-Maith, who was part of last year's distance medley relay team that took second at the All-Ohio's, will be able to make her first start of the indoor season.
Janaia - if she's healthy - can be a key component for us in the (4x400-meter relay) he said. We'll see what kind of shape she's in.
But hopefully a few of those people can step up.
In the throws events
however
Calkins said he would rely on the internal growth from the current group. That's no easy task considering squad's makeup and lack of training opportunities this week.
It's just a young squad on the throws side. You've got a lot of freshman like Alexa Macri and (redshirt freshman) Emily Woods, he said. We don't have those Emily Amendolas and Bahiyjaui Allens to lean on as we had in the past four years.
Hopefully as they get some experience (at the Lake Erie Open)
they'll improve and I have no doubt that they will.
