The Bobcats weren't investing too much in the Doug Raymond Invitational at Kent State. It was supposed to be a tune-up meet for this weekend's All-Ohio Championships.
Apparently, Juli Accurso didn't get the memo.
The freshman was part the distance medley relay team that finished fourth in at Kent State Field House and she placed seventh in the individual 800-meter run.
(Accurso) is going to be another individual that we're going to key in this weekend as a distance runner
coach Clay Calkins said. We'll be looking at her to havean impact at the championships.
The quartet of Accurso, Emily Skidmore, Ashley Waddington and DanielleWinningham finished the 4000-meter medley with a time of 13 minutes, 1.83 seconds - a solid finish considering many of Ohio's top distance runners, including senior Annie Beecham, were kept out this weekend.
We had a lot of individuals out especially on the distance side of things Calkins said. I think it set the stage well for the All-Ohio Championships.
Calkins said he was also impressed with the performance of sophomore Erica Toussant, who finished ninth in the 3000-meter run and 18th in the mile.
(Toussant) is coming along. She could be an impact performer for us if she keeps improving
he said. She obviously did some solid training during the winter break and came back in good shape. Hopefully those progressions can keep happening with her.
Last week, Calkins said he wanted to see his squad continue to improve indoor season opener in Columbus. He made it no secret, however, that his focus was on the championships this weekend, so the positive performances from Accurso and company a pleasant surprise.
Most of the athletes improved in their event areas
Calkins said. We just got back into it that first week. Training through this week
we didn't really let up on the athletes. We have bigger things to prepare for.
