Going into their first Mid-American Conference dual meet of the season, coach Joel Greenlee said he wanted the Bobcats to deal Northern Illinois a loss it would remember when the two teams face off again in the league tournament.
Ohio (4-3) responded by handing the Huskies a 30-11 defeat, and maybe a little fear to go with it, in DeKalb, Ill.
We're trying to send a message for the (MAC) tournament
Greenlee said. If you go out there and you beat a guy (handily) at dual meet and you dominate and you win by fall or by tech-fall guys don't want to wrestle you later on when that happens.
That puts a little something in their heads for the next time you wrestle.
The Bobcats won seven of 10 matches with pins by senior Erik Schuth and redshirt sophomore Gabe Ramos. Senior Germane Lindsey added a major decision and redshirt junior Nick Purdue earned a tech-fall as well.
Greenlee said the sting of losing 20-18 to Chattanooga on Jan. 3 motivated Ohio Friday. I think we wrestled a lot better than last time, Greenlee said. We got some key wins.
Lindsey delivered a clutch performance one match after sophomore Jake Wojcik lost by major decision to put the Huskies up 4-0. Lindsey tied the match with a major decision of his own
by a score of 16-7.
I was thinking at first to get the win, Lindsey said. After I found out the guy was kind of tired, I was like, 'alright, I can get some extra points to help the team out.' Lindsey said beating wrestlers during the MAC season can intimidate them later on at the MAC Championships.
That's pretty important when we wrestle guys in our conference, Lindsey said. Just so we can get that mindset in their head, like, 'damn, this guy's pretty tough.' That wears on the mind in wrestling.
This mental approach goes along with Greenlee's mantra that competing hard in every meet and practice breeds success.
That's the way you win big matches, Greenlee said. You go out there and dominate. You try to do that in practice, you try to do that in matches, you try to do that in everything you do.
