Bias nominated for board of elections seat

The current Athens City Council president could become a member of the County's Board of Elections after about 50 of his Democratic peers nominated him yesterday evening.

Council President Bill Bias secured a nomination for the board of elections at yesterday's Athens County Democratic Party executive committee meeting.

Party members will now send the nomination to Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted's office recommending Bias replace former board member, Bill Biddlestone, who resigned in mid-January.

As a board member

I hope to oversee elections as fairly as possible Bias said. I want to make sure that everyone including students

have the opportunity to vote.

The board of elections position has been empty since Biddlestone resigned, Bias said, adding that the secretary of state's decision should be made within the next three weeks.

After serving 10 years as council president, Bias said he is stepping aside with the hope that he will be appointed as a board of elections member.

Jim Sands, D-at Large, plans to run as Bias's replacement for council president.
