Although the kickoff of the Nelsonville Music Festival is still more than 90 days away, Casa Nueva's free show tonight will start building anticipation for the event.
It's just sort of our way of reminding people that it's winter
but coming up in a few months is a great music festival and that they should get their tickets said Tim Peacock, executive director of festival sponsor Stuart's Opera House. We announce the headliners and tell people who's playing and try to get people excited about it.
The Kind of Halfway to Nelsonville Music Festival Party will feature several Athens bands, including Whale Zombie, Scubadog and Duke Junior & the Smokey Boots.
The festival's headlining bands also will be announced at the show.
I will say this year's festival artist-wise
is going to be bigger and better than anything we've done before
Peacock said. I think (Ohio University) students will quite possibly be more excited than they ever have been for our festival. ... In the past we've had classic
legendary country be our main headliner
and that's not the case this year.
Although weekend passes, which will be sold for $60, don't officially go on sale until Monday, they will be available at a discounted price of $50 for tonight's audience.
This year's festival will feature a wide variety of musical genres, which Peacock said will attract different people.
We sort of pride ourselves on creating an eclectic lineup. There will be indie rock and rock n' roll and folk music and maybe some country music and maybe some jazz, Peacock said. We try to meld varying types of music that we think complement each other and that any music lover would be able to appreciate ... even though they may be unfamiliar with some of them.
Christopher Dodd
whose band Whale Zombie will perform at the Casa show tonight
played the Nelsonville fest last year with Manor Animals and said he is already anticipating this year's festival.
Last year, it was awesome, Dodd said. All the acts were great. It's a little pricey, but it's definitely worth it. It's three days of music. I really enjoyed myself, and this year it's going to be really cool.
