County reprimands dog warden for vehicular misuse

The Athens County dog warden will receive a written reprimand after the county commissioners confirmed his second misuse of a government-owned car.

Commissioner Lenny Eliason met with Dog Warden Jeff Koons yesterday to discuss allegations that Koons used the car for personal use.

The allegations stemmed from a letter sent Jan. 23 to commissioners detailing several instances in which Koons might have misused the vehicle.

The letter, signed by A Concerned Citizen of Athens County

claimed that Koons drove his children to his parents' home in Hollister each morning and to Trimble Middle School for basketball practice.

After the meeting, Eliason said he determined Koons did use the county car for personal use and that a written

reprimand will be placed in his file.

We want to make sure he understands the rules Eliason said.

Despite the reprimand, Koons said he understands Eliason's decision.

They gotta do what they gotta do Koons said.

The first time Koons was reprimanded for using a county car for personal use was during the last high school football season, Eliason said.

There are always things happening

Koons said in response to his first reprimand. He declined to comment further because he wants to stay on the same page as Eliason.

If Koons continues to misuse the government-issued car, he will be suspended, Eliason said.

County officials are currently reviewing the use of government-owned vehicles should the Internal Revenue Service audit the information. Prior to receiving the tip, commissioners were looking into the warden's car usage.
