Drug dealers intercepted in Nelsonville

The Athens County Sheriff's Narcotics Enforcement Team arrested two additional men on drug charges Wednesday night - making them the fourth and fifth drug-related arrests in the past week.

Deputies seized an ounce of crack cocaine from Ronnie R. Brown II, 24, of Westerville and Kevin R. Giles, 24, of Columbus, according to a Sheriff's Office news release.

While the two men were traveling through Athens County, deputies monitored a transaction in the Nelsonville McDonald's parking lot. The drugs were sold within the vicinity of a juvenile, according to court documents. Officers seized the drugs and arrested the two men, according to the release.

Brown was charged with complicity to trafficking in drugs, while Giles was charged with trafficking in drugs, according to the release. Both charges are first-degree felonies.

Both men were arraigned in Athens County Municipal Court yesterday morning. Giles is currently held on $100,000 bond and Brown is held on $50,000 bond at Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail.

They could spend a maximum of 10 years in prison and pay up to $20,000 in fines if convicted, according to Ohio Revised Code.

Giles and Brown are due back in court Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. for a preliminary hearing.

Between last Friday and Tuesday, the Narcotics Enforcement Team arrested two other men for possession of heroin - seizing more than 100 balloons of the drug.

John L. Hunter, 38, was arrested after deputies found 19 balloons of heroin and various drug paraphernalia. Jared Shumway, 27, was arrested after the team intercepted a shipment of 82 balloons of heroin to be sold in Athens, Nelsonville and Glouster.

Also on Tuesday, deputies arrested Anthony Roberts, 35, after discovering 140 Roxicodone pills in Roberts' vehicle. He was charged with aggravated possession of drugs.
