Honeycutters to 'jam' in backstage performance

The Honeycutters will bring their down-home folk style to Athens tomorrow in a special backstage performance at Stuart's Opera House.

The band will play on a smaller stage set up in the back of Stuart's historic theater, and the crowd will sit on what would usually be the stage.

Such a personal performance is only fitting of Asheville, N.C.-based Americana and alt-country band. The band usually consists of five members, but this backstage performance will be only vocalist and songwriter Amanda Platt and lead guitarist Peter James.

When we play a show as a duo

it's nice to have a crowd gather around you Platt said. It's really our 'jam.'

The Honeycutters have been in existence for about three years now, and the band's members are happy to be a part of the growing Appalachian Americana scene, Platt said.

I think it's cool because everyone says you can't make a living off of playing live music anymore Platt said. It's nice to be able to play songs I wrote and have the fans appreciate it for what it is.

The aspect of being backstage at Stuart's Opera House is initiative enough for the show. Backstage shows are few and far between, and the atmosphere is opportunistic, said Brian Koscho, the marketing and promotions coordinator for Stuart's.

There is an amazing sense of intimacy with the performers

Koscho said. I think it is really great to have the audience come spend an evening in the backstage of this historic building.

For most bands, giving its music to the world is just a click away with the advent of social media. The Honeycutters opt for the more traditional word-of-mouth method. Straying away from computer updates, the band plays live shows instead.

Stuart's only puts on about two backstage shows a year, and the venue only allows for 90 to 100 people. Both Stuart's and The Honeycutters expect a great show.

I myself am very excited to see them in the setting of a backstage show in Stuart's

Koscho said.
