International Studies departments to face off in cooking competition

The cultures of Latin America and Africa will come together in an event celebrated through food, music and games.

The Latin America vs. Africa Throwdown, which will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow in Gordy Hall will feature a cooking competition between the two departments.

The event basically brings together African Studies and Latin American Studies to celebrate the interconnectivity that exists between West Africa and certain areas of Latin America like the Caribbean

said Jose Delgado, director of the Latin American Studies program.

This is the second year that this type of event has occurred. The event will consist of not only the cooking competition but students will also have a chance to participate in trivia games to learn more about the regions and will be exposed to music from these cultures.

They will get a chance to taste a whole variety of foods from both cultures said Bose Maposa, associate director of the African Studies Program. (Students) will also have an opportunity to have some cultural exchanges and they will see the commonalities between the two cultures.

Not only is the event a way for students in these programs to come together, but also for students outside the programs to learn about these two regions.

I think they'll get a lot of great food

but also come away with a sense of the diversity of these two regions that the event is focusing on

as well as the shared heritage that exists between the two regions

said Karla Schneider, associate director for the Center for International Studies.

Schneider also said events bringing different programs together are appreciated within the Center for International Studies because they allow participants to appreciate the interconnectivity between the regions rather than studying them in isolation.

This event is one that Delgado says he hopes will happen in other departments on campus.

We wish to continue seeing this sort of interdisciplinary efforts made by our different academic units throughout campus

Delgado said. The more we do these types of events the more we come together as a community.
