A fabric and craft shop is the newest addition to the Market on State, filling a niche in the Athens community that has been overlooked.
The Tatted Corner is a family-run shop that sells fabrics, wool, linen, silks, satins, trims and supplies, said Cathy Young, co-owner of the shop and granddaughter of a professional seamstress. She said she loves to tat, which is an old form of lace making, because it's both relaxing and empowering to be able to create something.
Since I was 17
I've always wanted to open up a shop like this she said.
Young said it's no coincidence that she set up shop in the mall.
Brent Hayes, co-owner of the Market on State, 1002 E. State St., said he had been looking for a fabric store, and he thought it would compliment the mall's other shops.
We've had surveys and (a fabric store) is something people are looking for
he said, adding that we like to be somewhat of an incubator for local businesses.
Before this shop opened, the Athens area lacked a fabric or craft shop, Young said. Walmart recently eliminated its full-service fabric department, and the closest fabric shops are in Lancaster and Parkersburg, W. Va., she said.
Many residents who tat or sew had grown desperate, she said.
One lady let out a scream when she saw our shop: 'A fabric store
' Young said.
Young decided to move the shop from its old location, 20 Station St., because they outgrew it, she said, and local residents are taking notice.
What makes me the happiest is that we have a place to buy fabric and supplies
said Octa Peters, an Athens County resident and a frequent browser of The Tatted Corner.
