In the coming weeks, Ohio University might have to add Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences to its list of open positions.
With several ongoing searches for administrative employees, Ben Ogles, professor and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, said he is currently a finalist for a position at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
Ogles said he applied for the position of dean of the College of Family, Home and Social Sciences in late December, after BYU approached him.
While visiting the campus in Utah last week for an interview, Ogles was told to wait for BYU to take the next step.
They asked me if I'd be interested in applying. I said
'Yes ' Ogles said in an interview yesterday. I visited campus and now they're making their decisions. Within six to eight weeks
they'll let me know whether they're interested in pursuing.
Ogles, a BYU alumnus, said the job would be something of a homecoming for him.
It would be like going home; my mother lives close by
Ogles said.
Ogles has been the College of Arts and Sciences' dean since 2006, after holding the position on an interim basis for one year. Ogles makes $191,500 a year at OU, he said.
It would be a tough decision because I have so many friends and colleagues here
Ogles said. ... There's no reason to even consider (choosing yet)
they haven't even offered me the job.
Ogles said he does not know how many other finalists he is competing against.
I think it's probably a long shot that I would get the job because they do usually hire internal candidates
he said.
A number of OU administrators has left the university since January of last year, including former Vice President for Finance and Administration Bill Decatur, former Vice President for University Advancement Howard Lipman, former Assistant Vice President for Budget Planning and Analysis Rebecca Vasquez-Skillings, former Director of Sustainability Sonia Marcus, and former Director of Government Relations Teri Geiger.
