Students advocate value of athletics

About 30 students attended the student speakout portion of Wednesday’s Student Senate meeting to show their support of Intercollegiate Athletics, a department facing growing scrutiny at Ohio University as imminent budget cuts near.

Taylor Evans, president of the Sports Business Association, said he wanted to make sure people realize the benefits students receive from athletics. “It would be a lie to say they don’t benefit,” he said.

Courtney Cohen, the president of the student fan organization O-Zone, said OU’s Division I status was very important to her college choice and that moving down a division would make her reconsider her decision.

“If it was Division II, I would think about leaving,” she said. “The quality of the atmosphere and the student participation would be different.”
