Track and Field: Coach looks for throwers, sprinters to step up

The Bobcats will look to build on the momentum they started at last weekend's Lake Erie Open.

They will travel to South Bend, Ind. for the Meyo Invitational, a highly competitive meet at the Loftus Center on the campus of Notre Dame.

The Meyo Invitational is regarded as one of the top indoor meets in the country, so the Bobcats will compete against the premier competition.

Coach Clay Calkins said the Bobcats will be traveling with 17 athletes this weekend, consisting of some of their top performers in each event.

We are looking for the distance medley

the 3 000-meter to break school records this weekend. Calkins said. Key athletes will be distance runners Annie Beecham Melissa Thompson and Emily Pifer. Look for them to have good performances.

With the distance team pulling out strong performances on a weekly basis this season, Calkins is looking for them to take the next step and make their mark on the record books. Beecham took first last week in the mile, so she will be looking for a repeat performance.

Thompson, a freshman, did not run last week so after a week of rest from competition. She will attempt to pick up where she left off at the All-Ohio Championships, where she took second in the mile.

Calkins also mentioned that he looked for the sprinters and throwers to also make some improvements this weekend. He said to look for Alexis Geiger, Shareyna Spears and Danielle Winningham to also bring their times down.

The field event competitors, Calkins said, will look to keep making improvements and getting their distances higher.

This meet will not be team scored so we are looking to have strong individual performances this weekend. Calkins said. We hope to break school records and have a great overall meet.
