Former Athens Police Lt. David Williams was sworn in yesterday as the temporary department captain.
Williams, who has previously served as police captain, was asked to fill the position until the end of July because the search for a permanent captain has taken longer than expected, said Mayor Paul Wiehl at a news conference yesterday in the City Building, 8 E. Washington St.
Police Chief Tom Pyle said he has confidence in Williams and was very pleased when Williams accepted the offer to fill the position.
“Dave could have retired but he graciously accepted the job,” Pyle said.
Williams grew up in Athens and has worked for the department for 25 and a half years, he said, adding that he also worked for the FBI for five and a half years.
Williams said that he was more than willing to take the position because the spring fests make this season one of the busiest times for the department and he wants to help ensure the season runs more smoothly this year.
“My goal as temporary captain is to help the department and serve the community,” Williams said.
