After taking Broadway by storm in 2007 and winning eight Tony awards, including Best New Musical, Spring Awakening will make its Athens debut 7:30 p.m. tonight at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium as a part of the Performing Arts Series.
There are a limited number of tickets left for tonight’s performance, according to the University Programming Council’s blog.
The musical, set in 19th-century Germany, centers on a group of teenagers discovering their sexual identities in the oppressive society. It is based on a play of the same name written by Frank Wedekind in 1891, which deals with strong concepts including homosexuality, rape and child abuse.
The musical adaptation does not adhere strictly to the plot of the original play, but does deal with similar topics.
Countless critics, many of whom consider Spring Awakening one of the most important musicals in recent years, have praised the openness with which the show deals with sexual issues.
Duncan Sheik, best known as the singer of the popular ’90s song “Barely Breathing,” wrote the show’s music, which combines alternative rock and folk rock instead of focusing on the traditional show-tune style. The original Broadway cast recording won a Grammy in 2008.
