Baseball: Ohio leaves Cookeville 2-1 on the weekend

In the first ever meeting of the two teams, Ohio gave Tennessee Tech something by which to remember them.

The Bobcats won two of their three games against Tennessee Tech this weekend.

Perhaps the story of the weekend was Sunday’s game as Ohio shutout the Awesome Eagles 4-0 with an impressive performance by the Bobcats pitching staff.

“(Brent) Choban pitched a great game today,” coach Joe Carbone said. “Every practice is a building block, every game is a building block.”

Choban, a junior left-hander, pitched 7 1/3 innings allowing only four hits and three walks to go with three strikeouts.

Third baseman Dan Ward led the way on offense for Ohio with three hits on the day. He also scored on a Trace Voshell hit in the fifth inning, essentially putting Tennessee Tech away.

“We kind of put everything together today (Sunday),” Carbone said. “It was a good day for us and we played very well.”

Friday, the Bobcats split two very different games. Ohio dropped the first game 8-5 and won the second game 8-4.

Ward also came up big in both contests with two homers and three runs scored with five RBIs in the pair. Centerfielder Ethan Newton and Voshell also knocked four hits apiece.

“We’re not where we need to be as a team just yet but every game we play I feel we’re getting better,” Carbone said. “We’re getting a little more understanding of what we need to do and how to play baseball the Ohio University way.”

Ohio is 4-7 on the season. The Bobcats are 4-3 after a disappointing first outing against Furman that saw them go 0-4.

“It’s going to take a little time,” Carbone said. “We still have some pitchers we want to get out there, we’re running a lot of position players out there and taking a look at them so we’re kind of trying to get some answers still.”
