Another trip south for Ohio will pit the Bobcats against the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech in the first ever meeting between the two schools.
The Eagles enter this weekend’s series with a record similar to the Bobcats as they will also look to carry some of what they were able to do last weekend into this one.
Tennessee Tech has won two consecutive games and, like Ohio, the Golden Eagles got off to a rough start and are only 3-6 so far this year.
After a 0-4 start, the Bobcats won two of four games last weekend in Davidson, N.C., and began to make strides toward improving.
“We played a lot better; we were very disappointed we didn’t win four games,” coach Joe Carbone said. “We’re getting questions answered.”
The key to this weekend could be the offense as consistency has hurt Ohio’s chances during many of its first few games. Carbone stressed the importance of batting in runs when his team is in position.
“We’re leaving a lot of men on base,” he said. “I mean we’re hitting the ball, doing some good things, but then we’re just not putting it away.”
While Ohio’s hitting is trying to get back on track, the pitching is starting to pick up and Carbone said he is encouraged about the staff’s progress.
“We like what we see out of our starting pitching,” said Carbone. “Our pitching is better than it was last year.”
Sophomore right-hander Seth Streich was named Mid-American Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week after holding Davidson scoreless through seven innings and allowing just two hits with nine strikeouts.
“He was throwing in the 90s. After his first start against Furman, we felt that he wasn’t throwing his breaking ball hard enough,” said Carbone. “We like what Seth’s doing. He’s got a chance to be an outstanding pitcher.”
