Breaking: OU reports all students studying in Japan safe

Ohio University has confirmed all students currently studying abroad in Japan are safe after two earthquakes and a tsunami battered the island nation today.

The university has contacted all four of the OU students currently in the country and all are accounted for. OU will continue to stay in touch with them and provide guidance. The university is also contacting all of their parents, said Katie Quaranta, an OU spokeswoman.

“All OHIO students studying in Japan are safe and have been accounted for. We're thinking of those who have been affected by recent events,” said The Office of Education Abroad in a statement on Twitter.

Quaranta said there are currently 21 exchange students from Japan at OU this quarter. Another five are currently signed up to attend the university Spring Quarter.

"The university has been sending e-mails, making phone calls, and using social media like facebook and twitter to get in contact with the exchange students at the university," Quaranta said.

A news release directed anyone needing assistance to the Office of International Student and Faculty Services at (740) 593-4330 and Counseling and Psychological Services at (740) 593-1616.

The 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck the country this morning and caused widespread damage across the country, according to a statement released by Quaranta.

The Associated Press reported a 6.6-magnitude aftershock struck the country this afternoon.
