Daily Diss: "Born This Way" by Lady Gaga

Just when I didn’t think things could get weirder, she birthed herself.

For anyone who has seen the new Lady Gaga video, you know what I’m talking about. Don’t even think of calling me close-minded. The message is fine, but the video … er.

I’ve been a diehard Lady Gaga fan from the start, so the fact that these words are spilling from my mouth feels so wrong. But after several runs through the video the truth still stands — I don’t like it.

First off, I think the song is stupid. There, I said it. The lyrics are simple in a Hannah Montana sort of way.

“My mama told me when I was young, we are all born superstars.”

I’m sure my 9-year-old cousin would be inspired.

Inspired, sure. Inspired with the proclivity to dance in her underwear.

I think this song is weird to me not only because it sounds just like Madonna's "Express Yourself," but the message also conflicts with the video. She very explicitly denounces the pressure to conform to mainstream society, yet she shows off her rail-thin physique for half the video.

I have always considered her to be artful with costuming, lyrics and her performance. For once it seemed like there was more depth to pop. But this just feels like marketed self-esteem.

Yeah, I don’t like it, but I better get used to it. At least it’s better than Rihanna’s new song.
