Health fair fills floors in Baker

The Health and Wellness Fair attracted a steady crowd all day yesterday at Baker University Center.  Popular booths such as Promoting Ohio University Wellness, Education and Responsibility and Greeks Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol as well as the HIV/AIDS booth educated students on alcohol awareness and provided free testing.

“The day was very busy and went very well,” said Matt VonderBrink, a senior studying Health Service Administration and intern for the Campus Involvement Center. “POWER and GAMMA’s booth attracted a lot of students because they had music, free prizes and food.”

In addition, the HIV/AIDS booth attracted about 50 students who used the free testing services, VonderBrink said.

With vendors and booths on every floor, students were able to donate blood as well as learn about healthy eating habits and suicide prevention.

The Student Dietetic and Nutrition Sciences Association provided a booth that displayed the slogan “Eat Right with Color.”

“The basic principle is that if you eat all these colors, then you have a healthy, balanced diet,” said Chance Benner, a sophomore studying nutrition with science and exercise physiology.

For students interested in their body fat analysis, the Exercise Physiology Club provided the tools. With a bioelectrical impedance analyzer, students could instantaneously find out their body mass index.

“We asked for the patron’s age and height, and then they stepped on the scale,” said Kyle Criner, a freshman studying exercise physiology and member of the club. “After five seconds, it gives the analysis of body fat.”

“Most of the people who came here tested both their BIA and their hand grip strength,” Criner said.  For the hand-grip strength test, the patron used a dynamometer.

The 317 Board hosted a booth at the fair providing information about suicide prevention, proper prescription disposal and addiction.

“Suicide is the second-leading cause of death on college campuses,” said Svea Maxwell, 317 Board prevention coordinator. “We want to raise awareness about preventing suicide.”

“There’s a lot of stigma with suicide and depression.  Depression is an illness, but it is preventable and treatable,” Maxwell said.
