Post Letter: Column excludes key budget factors

I am writing in response to the portion of guest column in yesterday’s edition of The Post that dealt with New Jersey’s budget cuts.

Rather than bore your readers by re-butting each of the inaccuracies in Mr. Pflaum’s column, I suggest that, if anyone is interested in the whole story and not just Mr. Pflaum’s selected excerpts, they read the articles and editorials concerning this issue in the online versions of New Jersey’s newspapers.

Your readers should be aware that, although omitted from Mr. Pflaum’s column, New Jersey currently spends as much or more per pupil than, as Superior Court Judge Peter Doyne stated, “virtually any other state.”

Mr. Pflaum also failed to point out that all of Gov. Chris Christie’s budget cuts were approved by a Democratic legislature.

It also remains to be seen what action, if any, the New Jersey Supreme Court will take in response to Judge Doyne’s report. This is due to the fact that the consensus among most political reporters in New Jersey is that the only reason the New Jersey Supreme Court appointed a judge to hold a hearing on the school funding matter was so it didn’t have to deal with it at the time.
